Ministry of Crab, a name recognized in Sri Lanka as well as internationally, celebrates six years of successful operations in December 2017.One of only two Sri Lankan restaurants to have been recognised by the ‘Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants’ List (sponsored by San Pellegrino & Acqua Panna), Ministry of Crab has become a must-visit destination in Colombo. The restaurant has made its way onto many international publications such as the New York Times, Condé Nast Traveller and The Singapore Tatler. Situated in the elegant, 400-year-old, Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct, the restaurant sets itself apart by being the first restaurant in the island dedicated to serving the best of Sri Lanka’s export quality lagoon crabs; mighty crustaceans the size of which is not easily found elsewhere in the country. The largest to date having been a whopping 3.2kgs Crabzilla! With its daring no-freezer policy the restaurant’s commitment to fresh, local produce is a testament to the island’s bountiful natural resources, which has led to the commitment toward being one of the lowest food mile restaurants in Sri Lanka. Ministry of Crab’s uniqueness lies not only in its crustaceans, but also in its ability to bring even the simplest fare such as traditional Sri Lankan coconut sambol and wood fired street bread onto the platform of fine dining. It is for this uniqueness that the restaurant has been invited to host pop up events at renowned venues in the United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Maldives, Thailand, Taiwan and India. Ministry of Crab’s success has long exceeded the expectations of its three co-owners: Chef Dharshan Munidasa and cricketing legends Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. They are all in agreement that MOC’s success is attributed to the fact that they keep things simple and ensure the crab remains the star of the restaurant.
